Tom & Me
The Porch Walk That Changed Everything
Tom thought we were having a peaceful moment. I had other plans.

Tom always understood that I needed to inspect everything. He was the calm one; I was the one with follow-up questions. On that porch, he tried to take a quiet little walk while I followed close behind—purely for security purposes.
That was our arrangement. Tom moved through the world like he had already read the instructions. I treated every ordinary event as a developing situation. If he changed direction, I changed direction. If he paused, I needed to know why. Personal space was less of a rule and more of a suggestion.
Mom caught our moment on camera. There was no script, no grand plan, and definitely no permission form from Tom. It was simply the two of us being ourselves. Then millions of people watched it. Strangers began recognizing me and saying, ‘Oh, it’s this little guy again.’ Yes. It is. You’re welcome.
Nobody could have planned the part people loved most because nothing special seemed to be happening. There were no tricks, costumes, or carefully timed cues. Tom was walking. I was following. Mom happened to save it. That small piece of real life reached farther than any of us could have imagined.
The attention changed Banner’s World. New people found us, stayed for the jokes, and then began sharing their own pet stories. Some had a calm Tom in their family. Others knew a Banner who believed supervision was an act of love. The video reminded us that the most recognizable relationships are often built from tiny habits.
The views were exciting, but that video matters for another reason. Tom is no longer here, and the little porch walk lets us visit him again. Funny memories can become precious ones without warning. Save the ordinary moments. One day, they may be the stories that make you smile most.
Grief changes the way a video feels. At first, you notice the joke. Later, you notice the way somebody moved, the sound of a familiar step, or the exact spot where they stopped. What once looked ordinary becomes a doorway back to a day you did not know you would miss.
Tom never asked to become part of a viral reel. He would probably have preferred that everyone admire his patience. I hope they do. I may be the little guy people remember following behind him, but Tom was the steady heart of that moment.
So take the picture. Save the ten-second clip. Record the quiet morning that does not seem important enough to keep. You are not only collecting content. You may be protecting a piece of home for the person you will be later.
