Banner’s Rules

Why I Wear Sunglasses

The sun is bright. My future is brighter. Also, they look excellent.

Banner — Why I Wear Sunglasses
A true story from Banner’s real life.

Some dogs tolerate costumes. I approach accessories as a professional responsibility. Sunglasses tell the world that I am prepared for sunshine, photographs, and the possibility that somebody important may recognize me near the snack table.

My tie became part of the job in much the same way. Mom may choose the color, but I bring the expression. Together we have learned that one small detail can make a picture feel unmistakably like Banner’s World.

Mom learned early that I have opinions about what I wear. Comfort comes first. We keep dress-up moments short, use pet-safe items, and take everything off when I am finished posing. A good picture is never worth making an animal frightened or uncomfortable.

That rule matters more than the photograph. Watch the animal in front of you, not only the screen. A relaxed body, willingness to stay, and an easy expression mean more than getting one perfect shot. If I am finished, management receives immediate notice.

The best sessions are quick. Mom has the setting ready, I step into position, and the treats department remains within negotiating distance. Then the glasses come off and I go back to the serious business of being a dog.

My real rule is simple: find the harmless thing that makes you feel like yourself. Maybe it is bright glasses, a favorite shirt, or dancing in the kitchen when nobody is watching. Joy does not have to be serious to be real.

People sometimes wait for permission to enjoy what they enjoy. Dogs are better at this. We do not wonder whether happiness is sophisticated enough. We notice the sunny spot and lie down in it.

So wear the sunglasses. Choose the colorful tie. Keep the tradition that makes no sense to anybody else. As long as it is safe and kind, a little harmless silliness may be exactly what an ordinary day needs.
